Yoga for Beginners

Begin Iyengar Yoga with personalised guidance and sound foundations

What you will learn:

  • Foundational yoga postures adapted to your needs
  • Safe alignment and movement
  • How and why yoga props are used
  • Stability, mobility and body awareness
  • Relaxation and introductory breath awareness
  • Skills that can gradually support your own practice

Yoga Room offers personalised Iyengar Yoga sessions for complete beginners and anyone wishing to revisit the foundations of their practice.

One-to-one teaching is the main format, allowing each session to be adapted to your experience, abilities and individual needs. Private sessions for two or three people can also be arranged when participants would like to practise together.

No previous yoga experience is required. Maurice will introduce the practice progressively and help you develop confidence, awareness and a clear understanding of the essential foundations.

How beginner sessions work

Rather than following a fixed group course, your sessions will progress at a pace appropriate for you. Each lesson builds on what has already been learned while responding to your changing needs and development.

Maurice may use yoga bricks, belts, blankets, bolsters, chairs and other equipment to help you understand the poses and practice safely. All necessary equipment is available at the studio.

Please tell Maurice before your session about any injuries, health concerns, recent surgery or other circumstances that may affect your practice.

No. Yoga Room has the equipment needed for your session, including mats, belts, blocks, blankets, bolsters and chairs. You are welcome to bring your own mat if you prefer.
What do I wear?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. Clothing that lets Maurice observe your alignment and movement clearly is helpful.
Do I need previous yoga experience?
No. Complete beginners are welcome. Your session will begin at an appropriate level and progress according to your experience, needs and abilities.
Can I attend if I have an injury or physical limitation?
Often, yes. Please let Maurice know before the session about any injury, recent surgery, medical condition or limitation that may affect your practice so the session can be adapted appropriately.
Can I attend during pregnancy?
Yoga practice during pregnancy requires individual consideration. Please contact Maurice before booking so your experience, stage of pregnancy and any relevant medical advice can be discussed.
How many sessions will I need?
There is no fixed course length. Some students attend for a small number of sessions to establish sound foundations, while others continue regularly as their practice develops. You can decide what is appropriate as you progress.
Can two or three people attend together?
Yes. Private sessions can be arranged for two or three people who would like to practise together. A one-hour session is $100 for two people and $120 for three.
