What to Expect at Your First Session
Your first Yoga Room session is a personalised, in-person Iyengar Yoga lesson at the Burleigh Heads studio. New students are welcome, including complete beginners and experienced practitioners seeking individual guidance.
Before beginning, Maurice will talk with you about your yoga experience, your reasons for attending, any physical concerns or limitations, and what you would like to develop through your practice. This conversation forms part of the first session; there is no separate free consultation.
Maurice will then introduce or assess the essential foundations of your practice. The session will be adapted to your experience, needs and abilities rather than following a standard group-class sequence.
What to bring
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. Yoga equipment is available at the studio, although you are welcome to bring your own mat if you prefer.
Please let Maurice know before the session about any injuries, medical conditions, recent surgery or other circumstances that may affect your practice.
Session format
One-to-one teaching is the main format. A private session for two or three people can also be arranged when participants wish to practise together.
The first session may include:
- An introduction to Iyengar Yoga principles
- Assessment of posture, movement and existing experience
- Foundational standing, seated or restorative poses
- Guidance in alignment, stability and safe use of yoga equipment
- Suggestions for developing your practice between sessions
Every session is different and will be shaped by what is most appropriate for you.
