About Maurice McCann
The Teacher lives to give life to the pupils. He should have courage, vitality, memory, awareness and absorption which he should instil in his pupils. – B.K.S. Iyengar
Meet Maurice
Maurice McCann is a certified Iyengar Yoga teacher who has practised yoga for more than 40 years and taught since 2000. His teaching is grounded in careful observation, sound alignment and adapting the practice to the needs of each student.
Maurice began yoga in his late teens and developed a more committed practice in his early twenties. After returning to yoga in his mid-thirties, he undertook teacher training with John Leebold and Marina Jung, completing the program in 2003.
Inspired by Geeta Iyengar’s teaching during her visit to Australia in 2003, Maurice applied to study at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute in Pune, India. In 2005, he spent two months attending classes with Geeta Iyengar and Prashant Iyengar. He has continued to study the Iyengar tradition and currently participates in online classes with Prashant Iyengar.
In 2003, Maurice became principal teacher and co-director of the West Australian School of Yoga. He relocated to Queensland in 2010 and established Yoga Room in Burleigh Heads.
Over more than two decades of teaching, Maurice has taught thousands of students through regular classes, private lessons, intensives, workshops and retreats. In late 2023, he changed the primary Yoga Room teaching format from regular group classes to personalised sessions.
Today, Maurice primarily teaches one-to-one Iyengar Yoga sessions, with private sessions for two or three people also available by arrangement. He works with complete beginners, experienced practitioners and yoga teachers, tailoring each session to the student’s experience, needs and goals.
Maurice’s teaching places particular emphasis on safety, awareness, alignment and helping students develop skills they can gradually take into their own practice. His natural and down-to-earth approach encourages students to explore beyond perceived limitations without losing clarity or care.
Outside yoga, Maurice enjoys music, playing guitar and drums, the ocean, bushwalking, gardening and building and customising guitars.
